Six: Private D. Bayley, Witwatersrand Rifles, late South African Air Force, who was wounded in Italy, 25 September 1944

Raymond Dennis Bayley was born in Durban on 19 October 1925, and attested for the South African Air Force at Johannesburg on 6 June 1941, aged 15. He was posted ‘Absent without Leave’ on 31 March 1942, and subsequently attested for the Witwatersrand Rifles at Durban on 8 April 1942, under the name ‘Dennis Bayley’ (and giving his place and date of birth as Johannesburg, 19 October 1920). He served with the Witwatersrand Rifles in Egypt from 6 May 1943 to 17 April 1944, and in Italy from 23 April 1944. He was wounded in action at Pistoia, Italy, on 25 September 1944, and evacuated to No. 108 South Africa General Hospital, Florence. He was discharged on 13 February 1946.
