Sidney Lawrence Pert was born in Tottenham, London, on 1 August 1901, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 13 November 1917. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Impregnable from that date to 5 July 1918, and in H.M.S. Colossus from 6 July 1918 to 3 February 1919. Advanced Able Seaman on 16 December 1920, was injured on 12 October 1925 in H.M.S. Furious whilst securing the Forecastle guard rail. He served in H.M.S. Nelson from 1 September 1932 to 3 January 1935, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in October 1934. He saw further service during the Second Wold War, before being released on 19 September 1945.
