Pair: Private R. D. Clarke, 1st South African Infantry, who died of wounds on the Western Front on 19 October 1916

Robert Denis Clarke was born in Surrey and attested for the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force at Potchefstroom on 16 August 1915. He served with the 1st South African Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front, and was wounded, suffering a compound fracture to the right leg that required amputation. Gangrene set in, and he died on account of his wounds on 19 October 1916. He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
