William George Bateson was born on 30 November 1911, and was educated at Queen’s University, Belfast. He was commissioned on a Short Service Commission as Second Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1934, and served on the North West Frontier of India during the Waziristan Operations of 1936-37 with the 18th Field Ambulance. He resigned his commission on 1 January 1939, but was recalled to the Army following the outbreak of the Second World War, and served with the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1940; in Burma; and in North West Europe post D-Day. For his services during the Second World War he was twice Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 20 December 1940 and 22 March 1945). Following the cessation of hostilities he returned to general medical practice in Belfast.
