Six: Lance-Corporal R. E. Cunningham, Regiment de la Rey, South African Forces, late Prince Alfred’s Guard, who was killed in action at the battle of Monte Cassino, 10 May 1944

Eric Reginald Cunningham was born in Port Elizabeth on 20 February 1922, and attested for the Union Defence Force on 4 June 1940. He served initially in Prince Alfred’s Guard, before disembarking at Suez for service in the north African theatre of War on 30 April 1943. He was killed in action at the Battle of Monte Cassino, whilst serving with the Regiment de la Rey, South African Forces, on 10 May 1944. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial, Italy.
