Joseph Walter Summerfield was a native of Durban, and was born in February 1914. He enlisted in the Natal Mounted Rifles, 9 June 1940, and was advanced to Corporal in November of the same year. Summerfield advanced to Acting Staff Sergeant in May 1945, and was discharged the following month.
