Eric Bowden Bland was born in Wavertree, Lancashire, on 8 May 1918, and enlisted in the Royal Air Force as a Boy entrant. He served during the Second World War as a Flight Sergeant at R.A.F. Kallang, Singapore. He was captured by the Japanese on 20 March 1942, following the Fall of Singapore, and was held in Hintok Prisoner of War camp, near Hellfire Pass, Thailand, on the route of the Thai-Burma railway. Released following the cessation of hostilities, he remained in the Royal Air Force, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 24 September 1953. He died in Nottingham on 20 January 1985.
