Five: Sergeant J. A. Gilling, Royal Army Service Corps and St. John Ambulance Association

1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; St. John Service Medal, with Second Award Bar, unnamed as issued; together with three Royal Society for the prevention of Accidents Safe Driving Medals, two for Five Years with 1958 and 1965 to riband bars; and the third for 10 Years, with 1973 top riband bar, collectively with 1959, 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1974 riband bars; St. John Ambulance Re-Examination Cross, bronze, the reverse engraved ‘A234852 John A. Gilling’, together with two St. John Ambulance Association lapel badges and an unofficial Cross of the Order of St. John, good very fine (lot) £80-£120

John Albert Gilling was born on 6 March 1921 and attested for the Royal Army Service Corps at Ashford on 22 April 1941. He served as a Driver with 504 Company, R.A.S.C., as part of 43rd Division, during the Second World War in North West Europe from 16 June 1944 until August 1946, and was promoted Corporal on 8 April 1946, and Sergeant on 1 June of that year. Discharged on 18 August 1946, he subsequently served as an Ambulance Driver with the Middlesex Ambulance Service, and was a member of the St. John Ambulance Association, passing their Civil Defence Full Course in December 1951.

Sold with the recipient’s Soldier’s Release Book; Royal British Legion Membership card and lapel badge; Royal Army Service Corps Regimental Association membership card; six Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Diplomas; two St. John Ambulance Association Certificates; a Civil Defence Certificate; R.A.S.C. cap badge and two London Ambulance Service badges; various cloth insignia, including Sergeant’s rank stripes; and various First Aid booklets; photographs; and other ephemera.
