Frederick John Burns was born on 24 October 1918, and attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment on 6 October 1938. He served with the 5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion, as part of the 44th Division, British Expeditionary Force during the Second World War, and was wounded and taken Prisoner of War at Boulogne on 4 June 1940. He was subsequently held for the rest of the War at Stalag 20B at Marienburg, and was released in February 1945.
