Derek Stringfellow was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire, on 19 September 1929, and enlisted with the 4th (Training) Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment in 1952. He transferred to the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment the following year, and served with them in Korea from 23 March 1953 to 6 January 1954.
