James Wilshire was born in Devizes, Wiltshire. He joined the Metropolitan Police in July 1879, and served in ‘H’ (Whitechapel) Division, Metropolitan Police at the time of the ‘Jack The Ripper’ serial killings. Wilshire served with the Division for 20 years, before transferring to ‘D’ Division. He served with the latter for 6 years and was discharged, 17 July 1905.
