Joseph Whitfield Hunter was born in Blackhall Mills, co. Durham, in 1895 and attested for the 1st Northern Brigade, Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Force) at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 18 May 1915. He served during the Great War on the Western Front from 4 July 1916; was wounded on 26 October 1917; and was awarded the Military Medal whilst serving on attachment to the 63rd Divisional Ammunition Column. He was discharged on 30 June 1919.
