B.E.M. London Gazette 29 January 1957, the original recommendation states:

‘MELF Nov. 54 - Jul 56. During her 18 months with this Company Sgt. Oakman has done much in an unobtrusive way to keep up the morale of the Company by running the Orderly Room efficiently and cheerfully.

During the move to Cyprus and the reorganisation of the Unit she was a tower of strength. All office equipment, documents, etc., arrived well packed and in excellent condition, and she remained calm and cheerful even when working in cramped and difficult conditions.

She has an excellent manner with all ranks, is always a willing worker but has a sense of proportion and humour and does not let things get on top of her. She maintains a well disciplined and happy office and trains her subordinates, two having recently gained promotion.

Hers is not a spectacular job, but rather one of dull daily routine which seldom receives recognition. The Unit has been short of Platoon Officers during this period and has suffered many staff changes, but Sgt. Oakman, day after day, has done her duty willingly cheerfully and quietly and I have always known that as a result that I have had a loyal, efficient and cheerful staff working with me.

Remarks of Brigade Commander:

An excellent NCO whose integrity and loyalty are undoubted. In the face of all trials and difficulties Sgt. Oakman maintains an extremely high standard of efficiency in a calm and cheerful manner. Her bearing at all times is an example to all ranks.’
