William Henry Montgomerie was born in Singapore on 25 January 1841 and was educated at Cheltenham College. He was appointed a cadet in the Madras Artillery on 1 December 1856, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant on 27 August 1858. He served with the Madras Artillery at Dumooragunge, Toolspore and Baiswara during the Indian Mutiny campaign of 1858. He transferred to the Royal Artillery in 1861, and was promoted Second Captain on 13 October 1868, whilst serving with the 14th Brigade, Royal Artillery. He was further promoted First Captain on 5 July 1872, and in 1873 was serving as an Adjutant for ‘D’ Brigade Royal (late Madras) Artillery. He was promoted Major on 27 April 1876, and died at sea en route from Bermuda to Halifax, Canada on 22 April 1878 in H.M.S. Sirius.
