George Edward Goldsmith was born in Portsea, Hampshire, on 17 April 1877, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 7 July 1894. Advanced Able Seaman whilst serving in H.M.S. Camperdown on 1 January 1898, he transferred to H.M.S. Naiad on 19 March 1901, and served in her during the Boer War and during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 31 October 1902 to 2 May 1903. Posted to H.M.S. Philomel on 12 February 1908, he saw further service during the blockade of the Somali coast from 19 August 1908 until July 1909. He served in various Shore based establishments during the Great War, and demobilised for service as a Rigger in the Mercantile Marine Reserve on 3 October 1918.
