Patrick Douglas was born in Motherwell on 22 September 1927, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 19 December 1945. He was promoted Stoker 1st Class on 12 December 1946, and was discharged in 1948, subsequently joining the Merchant Navy.
