Birks Memorial Bar ‘W.O. II E. M. Sparrow C. B. Highrs. Died in His Country’s Service 3 Jan. 1945’, extremely fine £100-£140
Emmanuel Markus ‘Manny’ Sparrow was born in Reserve Mines, Nova Scotia, on Christmas Day 1920, and attested for the Cape Breton Highlanders at Sydney, Nova Scotia, on 14 October 1939. Advanced Quartermaster Sergeant, he was killed in action on 3 January 1945- tasked with transporting rations he travelled too far into enemy territory, and was surrounded by the Germans at Villa Nova, Italy: ‘Manny raised his tommy machine gun in a desperate attempt to beat the odds and wipe out the enemy. Unfortunately, his efforts were not enough.’ (Canadian War Memorial refers). He is buried in Villanova Canadian War Cemetery, Italy.
