James Painter was born in Exeter, Devon and attested for the Royal Artillery at Yeovil in March 1856. He advanced to Wheeler Bombardier in July 1857, and to Wheeler Sergeant in April 1863. He served with the 4th Brigade, Royal Artillery in Canada. Painter was discharged, 27 March 1877, having served for 21 years and 13 days.
Painter was additionally entitled to the Fenian Raid 1870 clasp.
