Daniel Burgess was born at Chatham, Kent on 6 May 1863, and attested there for the Royal Marine Light Infantry as a Drummer on 9 July 1878 He served with the “Mediterranean Battalion” from 29 June 1882 until 23 October 1882, and having been promoted Corporal on 30 December 1882, as a member of the “R.M. Battalion, Egypt” from 10 February 1884 until 8 May 1885. Demoted to Private on 4 March 1885, he subsequently served in H.M.S Boscawen (1888-90) and H.M.S. Garnet (1890-93) and died, whilst at Plymouth, of pneumonia on 26 June 1893.
