Benjamin Halstead was born in Bingley, Yorkshire, in 1878, and attested as a ‘Volunteer’ for the West Yorkshire Regiment at Bradford, Yorkshire, on 30 January 1900. He served wit the 1st Volunteer Service Company, 2nd Battalion, in South Africa during the Boer War 22 February 1900, and was discharged on 29 May 1901, after 1 year and 120 days’ service (also entitled to the date clasp South Africa 1901).

Following the outbreak of the Great War he re-enlisted in the Royal Engineers on 24 September 1915, and was discharged in respect of sickness on 14 December 1918, being awarded a Silver War Badge. At the time of his discharge his unit is shown as having been ‘Railway Troops Depot.’
