George Woodhams Lockton was born at Thornton Heath, Surrey, on 17 June 1892, and was educated at Whitgift School. Commissioned temporary Lieutenant in the Army Pay Department on 7 January 1915, he served during the Great War on the Western Front from 13 January 1915, before transferring to the 153rd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He died at the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleul on 21 October 1917, from wounds received earlier that day at Spoil Bank, Hollebeke, and is buried in Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France.
