Andrew Noble Cordiner was born in Juniper Green, Scotland, served during the Great War initially with the Kimberley Regiment (7th Infantry) in German South West Africa, before attesting for the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force. He served with the 4th South African Infantry on the Western Front from 25 October 1917, and was taken Prisoner of War at Marriers Wood, during the German Spring Offensive, on 24 March 1918. He was repatriated on 12 October 1918, suffering the effects of wounds, presumably received at Marriers Wood on 24 March 1918, and was discharged on 26 July 1920.
