William Henry Hurst was born in Torquay, Devon, on 1 August 1911, and joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 2 April 1931. He served during the Second World War in H.M.S. Durban from 31 July 1939 to 24 March 1940; in H.M.S. Excellent from 6 June to 13 August 1940; in H.M.S. Ferret from 1 February 1941 to 2 July 1942; and in H.M.S. Attack from 27 August 1944 to 10 October 1945. He was awarded his Royal Naval Reserve Long Service and Good Conduct Medal onboard H.M.S. Victory on 29 April 1943.
