Kenneth Edward Topp was born in Durban, Natal, on 16 January 1923, the son of Major Percy Topp, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the South African Air Force on 5 September 1942. He was promoted Lieutenant on 5 March 1943, and served during the Second World War with No. 12 Squadron in Italy.
