John Hinkley was born in Southwark, London, on 9 June 1863, and joined the Metropolitan Police at Scotland Yard on 30 June 1884. Posted to ‘H’ (Whitechapel) Division, he transferred to ‘A’ (Whitehall) Division in 1887, and then to ‘B’ (Westminster) Division on promotion to Sergeant on 30 March 1894. On 3 April 1899 he transferred again, this time to ‘J’ (Bethnal Green) Division. He was promoted to Inspector in ‘F’ (Covent Garden) Division on 5 November 1900, but was reduced to Sergeant and transferred back to ‘J’ Division on 10 December 1901. He retired on 4 July 1909, after 25 years and 5 days’ service. In 1911 he joined ‘W’ (Clapham) Division as a Special Police Sergeant on a short commission for the Coronation, and received the Coronation Medal 1911.
