Alfred Edward Brain was born in Turnham Green, London, and attested for the 18th Foot as a Boy at Westminster Police Station in November 1872. He advanced to Musician in May 1874, and transferred in that role to the Scots Guards in September 1878. Brain advanced to Lance-Sergeant (Band) in July 1889, and was discharged, 30 April 1891, having served at ‘Home’ for 18 years and 155 days.
