The French Order of the National Economy was instituted on 6 January 1954 as an award to those individuals, French and foreign, who had aided the French economy. It came in three classes (Commander, Officer, and Chevalier). It was discontinued on 3 December 1963, and replaced by the general National Order of Merit.
