Officer’s Blue Cloth 1878 Pattern Home Service Helmet, a good quality example of standard format, the blue cloth body complete with all gilt metal fittings, the front with a spurious plate purporting to be that of the 38th (1st Staffordshire) Regiment, the ‘38’ numerals are of the wrong metal and of weak construction, the Knot though in silver plate is again of the wrong pattern, no gilt present on the whole of the plate. The helmet with buff leather sweatband crimson silk lining and quilted crimson silk crown lining, together with a japanned metal carrying tin, the chin chain with a fracture near the loop-up end and some gilt lacking to the fittings, otherwise the helmet is a good sound example (2) £200-£300
