Frank Smith served during the Great War with the 1/5th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (T.F.) in the French theatre of war from 15 April 1915. He advanced to Lance-Corporal and was in charge of the Battalion Runners. The Battalion served as part of the 146th Brigade, 49th (West Riding) Division on the Somme, July - November 1916. Smith is recorded as distinguishing himself in the field, 1 - 28 September 1916, during which time the Battalion took part in the attack on the Schwaben Redoubt.
Sold with the following original documentation: named Divisional Gallantry Card; Certificate of Employment During the War; enclosure for 1914-15 Star and registered envelope, both addressed to recipient at ‘14 Mount Ephraim, Holgate Road, York’; receipt from James R. Ogden, Diamond Merchant of Harrogate for mounting work done on M.M., addressed to recipient at St. George’s Hospital, and dated 27 October 1917.
