John Allen was born in the Parish of Gladsmuir, Edinburgh, and enlisted for the Coldstream Guards at Tynemouth on 22 December 1813, aged 21, a shoemaker by trade. He served in Colonel Abercromby’s Company at Waterloo which was heavily engaged at Hougoumont and where he was severely wounded in the left side by a musket ball. He was discharged on 24 December 1818, in consequence of his wounds and also from being scrofulous.
