Joseph McDonald was ‘an Irishman by birth... he was a Roman Catholic and later became a monk. He then became a member of the Church of England and was ordained in 1921. He took a curacy in Wales and later at Aston Clinton, Bucks, before coming to Shernborne with the living of Fring in 1929.
He retired in 1979 as Vicar of Shernborne with Anmer to live in Hampstead, and later in a home for retired clergy. He had close ties with Wisbech Wheelers Cycling Club for over 30 years. The club held an annual service at Shernborne parish church...
[His] death occurred at Manormead, Hindhead, Surrey [aged 91 years, 29 January 1984]... The funeral took place at Shernborne, the Rev. Hugh Pollock officiating. He was assisted by the rural dean, the Rev. Paul Allton, who also represented the Bishop of Norwich and the Archdeacon of Lynn.’ (copied obituary included with the lot refers).
The Reverend McDonald was vicar of Shernborne Church on the Sandringham Estate for 50 years.
