He served with the 11th (Lonsdales Pals) Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 1916, and was killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. On this date the Battalion was involved in the attack on the Leipzig Salient. They advanced from assembled positions in Authuille Wood at 8:00 a.m., and soon came under very heavy machine gun fire, with total casualties of almost 500.
