William John McGuire was born in Cape Town in February 1868, and joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class in November 1883. He advanced to Able Seaman in June 1887, and to Petty Officer 1st Class in March 1897. McGuire was awarded the L.S. & G.C. in April 1901, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve in May 1906.
