Arthur Hamill was born in the Parish of Soggenel, Belfast, and attested for the 50th Foot at Lisburn, County Antrim, on 19 May 1841, aged 19, a labourer by trade. He was discharged on 25 June 1855, being unfit for further service, having served abroad for 8 years 6 months in the East Indies. He was then ‘in possession of One Good Conduct Badge with pay, 1 Bronze Star for Punniar and 1 Silver Medal for Sutlej in which places he was engaged. Wounded at Ferozeshah.’
