Patrick Garvey was born on 2 February 1893, in the Parish of St Patrick’s, Oldham, Lancashire. A shoemaker by trade, he joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry at Liverpool on 5 January 1912. He joined H.M.S. Albion on 15 July 1914, and was wounded in action on 18 March 1915, by splinters of shell which shattered both arms necessitating amputation and also wounds on body and head. Albion was in the process of disembarking her R.M. contingent when she came under shell fire in the Gallipoli straits from Turkish shore batteries. Garvey was discharged invalided on 23 July 1915.
