M.B.E. London Gazette 3 June 1919:
‘For valuable services rendered in connection with the War.’
Frederick Wombwell was born on 8 March 1876, and attested for the Grenadier Guards. He served with them in the Sudan Expedition of 1898, and was present at the Battle of Omdurman. He served in the ranks for 17 years and 152 days; as a Warrant Officer for 5 years and 82 days, and as a Warrant Officer Class I for 3 years and 62 days. He served with the Bedfordshire Regiment during the Great War on the Western Front from 14 August 1914, and was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 22 June 1915). After a spell at home with the Suffolk Regiment he was commissioned Lieutenant (Quartermaster) in the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment on 31 March 1918, and served with them once more on the Western Front until the cessation of hostilities, for which service he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire. He subsequently transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers on 4 February 1922, and was promoted Captain on 31 March 1926.
