A fine ‘Thin Red Line’ group of four awarded to Sergeant James Urquhart, 93rd Highlanders and later 23rd Foot

Urquhart, 93rd Highlanders); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (821 Sergt. Jas, Urquhart. 1st Bn. 23rd Foot); Turkish Crimea 1855, British issue (Jas. Urquhart, 93rd Highlanders) engraved naming, all fitted with silver ribbon buckles, very fine or better (4) £2,400-£3,000

James Urquhart was born in Forres, Morayshire, and joined the 93rd Highlanders in December 1850. He served in Turkey and the Crimea, 2 years 4 months, and was present at the battles of the Alma, Balaklava and Sebastopol. He served throughout the Indian Mutiny and was present at the relief and capture of the city of Lucknow. He transferred to the 23rd Foot at Lucknow on 19 December 1859, then aged 27 and allowed to reckon 8 years 350 days former service in the 93rd Highlanders. He was promoted to Corporal on 8 January 1861, to Sergeant on 17 September 1863, and was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with Gratuity of £10 on 2 July 1869. He transferred to the Permanent Staff of the Royal South Lincoln Militia in February 1870, but re-transferred to the 23rd Foot in in February 1871 and was finally discharged at Pembroke Dock on 16 January 1872.
