M.C. London Gazette 18 October 1938: ‘For gallant and distinguished service in action in connection with the operations on the North West Frontier of India, 1938 - Lieutenant James William Stanley Warden, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Punjab Regiment, Indian Army, attached South Waziristan Scouts.’

Lieutenant Warden is mentioned in the history of the 2nd Punjab Regiment when in command of a platoon on the night of 8/9th March 1935, which ‘stole quietly out of camp and ambushed a party of Asil tribesmen, killing three and wounding one without loss. This successful ambush had an effect out of all proportion to the comparatively few casualties it had inflicted, for the enemy offered no further opposition and for several weeks there was no night sniping of the Battalion’s position.’

Promoted to Captain in September 1940, he resigned his commission on 3 May 1945.
