Herbert James Bateup was born in Mayfield, Sussex, and prior to the war was employed by the Margate & District Post Office. He resided with his wife at 59 Beatrice Road, Margate. Bateup served during the Great War with the 1/8th (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment (Post Office Rifles). He was killed in action on the Western Front, 12 September 1917, and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium and on the Margate & District Post Office Staff Memorial.
