Bert Frederick Darkins was born in Stoke Ferry, Norfolk. He served during the Great War with the 15th Hussars in the French theatre of war from 8 June 1916. Darkins advanced to Lance-Corporal, and died of wounds on the Western Front, 28 November 1917.

Lance-Corporal Darkins is buried in the Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, Somme, France.
