Isaac Brocklehust was born in Hyde, Lancashire, in 1839, and attested for the Indian Military Forces at Bolton, Lancashire, on 18 May 1859. Posted to the 5th Battalion, European Infantry, he arrived in India on 18 December 1859. In 1862, the Honourable East India Company’s armed forces were transferred to the Crown, and Brocklehurst’s unit became the 101st (Royal Bengal) Fusiliers. He served with the 101st Fusiliers throughout the Umbeyla campaign, 20 October to 23 December 1863, during which the regiment suffered amongst the heaviest casualties of any Regiment, with a total of 3 Officers and 19 other ranks killed, and 2 Officers and 63 other ranks wounded. he was discharged on 1 June 1880, after 21 years and 15 days’ service.
