Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (G. W. Hodge. Ship’s Corpl. H.M.S. Agincourt) good very fine £70-£90

George William Hodge was born in West Wittering, Sussex, on 21 October 1849, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 1 September 1865. Posted to H.M.S. Satellite, he was advanced Able Seaman on 12 January 1870, and Leading Seaman on 1 March 1875. He transferred to H.M.S. Agincourt on 11 July 1877, and was advanced Ship’s Corporal 2nd Class on 16 July 1877, and Ship’s Corporal 1st Class on 1 July 1880, being awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal the same year. He was shore pensioned on 25 October 1887, his last ship being H.M.S. Royal Adelaide.
