Alfred Royal was born in Jarrow-on-Tyne on 3 February 1876, and joined the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 9 June 1902. Advanced Engine Room Artificer 1st Class in the cruiser H.M.S. Blonde on 18 October 1914, he served in her throughout the Great War, and was promoted Chief Engine Room Artificer on 1 October 1916. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 21 June 1917, and was shore pensioned on 8 June 1924.
