William James Tappenden was born in Dover, Kent, in 1874 and attested there for the East Kent Regiment on 23 November 1892. Posted to the 2nd Battalion, he transferred to the 1st Battalion on 8 December 1894, and served with them in India on the North West Frontier. He was discharged on 22 November 1904, after 12 years’ service.
Following the outbreak of the Great War, Tappenden re-enlisted in the Rifle Brigade, on 24 October 1914, and served with the 18th Battalion as part of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 24 August to 6 November 1915. He was demobilised on 31 December 1919, after a further 5 years and 69 days’ service.
