Arthur Charles Catton was born in Yarmouth, Norfolk, in July 1906. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force as an Aircraftman 2nd Class in December 1924. Catton was posted for service in Iraq in December 1926, and joined 70 Squadron (Victorias) at Hinaidi in January of the following year. Catton advanced to A.C.1. in July 1927, and to Leading Aircraftman in July 1928.
