Leonard George Beaby was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire in January 1892. He joined the Civil Service as a Temporary Boy Clerk in 1907, and joined the Royal Navy as a Writer 3rd Class in December 1910. Beaby advanced to Writer 1st Class and service during the Great War included in the destroyer depot ship H.M.S. Greenwich. After the war he was appointed a JP for Hampshire, and served as the Secretary of the Portsmouth Local Committee, Royal Naval Benevolent Trust.
