Regt.); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 2nd issue, large letter reverse (Qr. Mr. Sergt. Alexr. Ross. 64th. Regt. 1856) engraved naming, all with contemporary top silver riband buckles, the rank of Sgt. erased after Qr. Mr. on first two, light contact marks, very fine and better (3) £700-£900

Alexander Ross was born in Auchindoir, Aberdeen in 1820 and enlisted in the 64th Regiment in 1835. He served in the Persia campaign of 1857 being present at the storming and capture of Reshire, the surrender of Bushire, and the bombardment of Mohammerah. In India he served in Bengal and the N.W. Provinces in suppressing the Mutiny of 1857-58, including operations at Cawnpore under General Windham, Defence of Cawnpore and defeat of the Gwalior mutineers (December 1857), actions at Kalee Nudee and Kerkeroulie, the assault and capture of Bareilly, affair of Shahjehanpore, the capture of the fort of Bunnai and the destruction of the fort of Mahmodie.

Ross received his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with a £15 gratuity in April 1856. He was advanced to the rank of Quartermaster in December 1859 holding that post until his retirement in Malta in the rank of Quartermaster and Honorary Captain in July 1871 after 35 years’ service. He retired to Moss Side, Lancashire and died in Blackpool on 27 October 1899. A fine memorial in Blackpool Cemetery commemorates Ross and other members of his family including two of his grandsons killed in the Great War.
