Arthur Oliver Samson was commissioned Second Lieutenant, 2nd London Divisional Transport and Supply Column, Army Service Corps, in August 1914. He served during the Great War with the Army Service Corps in the Egyptian theatre of war from 16 September 1915. Samson advanced to Temporary Captain in December 1915, and to Acting Major in September 1917.
