Charles Alfred Cook was born at Ardingly, near Haywards Heath, on 21 December 1897, and enlisted into the Royal Marine Artillery at Brighton on 16 August 1915. He served at sea aboard H.M.S. Hindustan from April 1916 to February 1918, and aboard H.M.S. Princess Royal from August 1918 to May 1919. On 18 July 1919 he embarked for service with the 6th R.M. Battalion in the North Russian Expeditionary Force, returning to England on 14 October 1919. During his time in Russia he served in “C” Company which saw its fair share of such fighting that took place. Discharged at his own request on 6 December 1923, he afterwards joined the East Sussex Constabulary on 17 March 1925, and retired on 20 September 1953.
