Donald McBean was born in Birmingham on 19 September 1886, the younger son of John McBean Esq., and the grandson of Captain Thomas Hamilton McBean, Royal Scots Greys. He was educated at King Edward’s, Birmingham, and Birmingham University, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in September 1914. Promoted Lieutenant in February 1915, he served with the 10th Battalion during the Great War in Mesopotamia from October 1915, and was killed in action on the Western Front on 15 March 1916. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Malcolm McBean was born in Birmingham on 15 July 1881, the elder son of John McBean Esq., and the grandson of Captain Thomas Hamilton McBean, Royal Scots Greys. He was educated at King Edward’s, Birmingham, and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Border Regiment on 5 September 1916. He served with the 5th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 27 December 1916, and was promoted Lieutenant. He subsequently transferred to the Tank Corps, and was advanced Captain.
